Phase 5 of the ABCD study took place from October 2019 to September 2020. This time, the adolescents as well as both parents were asked to complete a questionnaire.
Adolescent questionnaire
An ABCD app was developed for the adolescents in which the adolescents could complete the questionnaire over a 7-day period. Questions included health & well-being, sports, digital media use, sleep, substance use, nutrition and major life events.
The app also measured average screen use, screen distance, screen brightness, and volume. In addition, mobile phone data on the number of steps per day was transmitted to the ABCD study server.
The adolescents were also administered 2 tests: the implicit association task (IAT) and the delay discounting task.
If the adolescents did not want to download an app, they could also complete the questionnaire online.
Parent questionnaire
In phase 5, both father and mother were asked to participate. The questions addressed the parents‘ and their child’s health and behaviour. Parents were also asked about parenting practices, their own screen & substance use, and the family situation. Parents could complete the questionnaire online.
